![]() As far as gameplay is concerned, it’s just about reading text and making choices. The first one if gonna be what you would expect from this title: a dating simulator where you, as the female student, will become closer to one of the birds and try to get an ending with them. ![]() I will divide this game in 2 parts, as I feel that’s how it was meant to be. ![]() When you begin the game, you have the option to see an anime representation of what each bird would look like as a human, probably to better choose which hot guy you want to go for ! But they’re still birds stop dreaming… You get some classic school/town backgrounds you would get in pretty much any anime games but the birds are more like pictures over those backgrounds. On the graphic side of things, it also feels a bit weird. So this “can the two fall in love and get along” thing is some kind of attempt to fix the relationship between the two races and prove they can coexist peacefully. You see, in this world birds have become the dominant race on earth and have basically aquired intelligence and knowledge on par with us and humans have become rarer and are considered inferior now. You start as a female transfer student coming to this bird only school with a mission: prove that love between humans and birds is possible. I will not spoil the story but will still talk about how it starts and what you’re supposed to be doing here. Some time later, it came around as the PS+ lineup, and I thought hey what the hell I’ll play it for fun and get some free trophies along the way. But I didn’t wonder enough to buy it as it’s clearly not for me. Then i saw this one and thought: nah can’t be what I think it is but then I wonder what it could really be about. The effect is made worse when you play through for the full ending a second time, and you have to click and read through the same lengthy text a second time to spot the differences in the complete version.I am at this stage in life where I would dare think that i’ve played a lot of japanese games and that little could possibly still surprise me. Though you're finding out all of the complexities of the world you've already sunk ten or so hours into, you're doing so by clicking and reading without any noticeable change. While Hatoful Boyfriend allows for a variety of choices, the choices made while playing through the Bad Boys Love plotline don't seem to make any difference on the ultimate outcome. Unfortunately, it's also where the already minimal gameplay suffers. It's a huge twist, and, because it requires so much of the game be unlocked already, it's something players that are just in it for a few laughs probably miss. Once the player unlocks Bad Boys Love, the second mode, the game becomes a murder mystery, allowing the player to connect the dots to learn of a conspiracy that changes everything they've experience so far. Attend classes, boost stats, and choose the right option for a hopefully happy ending with the bird of your choice. Until this option appears, the game is a straightforward dating sim. Things get worse when the player has the option to "wish for the mad love of a fallen angel," opening up another potential romance option and a final boss battle straight out of a JRPG. Pursuing Yuuya-once his storyline is available-reveals a secondary plot that calls into question the politics of the in-game world, and attempting to romance Shuu quickly shows the player that not all is right at St. There are several light-hearted paths to choose from at first-romancing Ryouta is a sad but sweet story, and San's plot is a completely ridiculous quest for pudding. Hatoful Boyfriend isn't as cute and romantic as the first hour or so of play would have you believe. That's more difficult than it sounds, as one small change can, surprisingly, end in the player's death. The game tends to encourage that idea-not all romance options are available on the first playthrough, and unlocking the full plot requires the player to romance every possible bird with all possible endings. It's far too easy to write Hatoful Boyfriend off as a weird gimmick not worth playing for more than an hour or two. A Complex Simulator That's Not Just for the Birds
